“All this he saw, for one moment breathless and intense, vivid on the morning sky; and still, as he looked, he lived; and still, as he lived, he wondered.”
When Mole emerges from their little home into the wide world above, they encounter a life of extraordinary, complex friendships: The anxious yet kindly Rat, the gruff yet generous Badger, the self-absorbed yet affectionate Toad. Together, the friends embark on invigorating adventures, from stolen motorcars to prison escapes and confrontations with the darker inhabitants of the Wild Wood. It is a tale encompassing growth, loneliness, ostracisation and ultimately friendship and self-acceptance.
This wonderfully compassionate adaptation by Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van) is brought to life in a new production with Stacks on Theatre at KXT Broadway in 2023 in an exciting theatrical staging by James Raggatt (Youth and Destination, 2018).

“Our nature as persons is fundamentally complicated and imperfect. Friendship manifests itself in our capacity to embrace and love each other, and to help each other grow despite our imperfection. No friend is relieved of this, for no person is wholly andwithout exception uncomplicated” – James Raggatt, Director
