the bAKEHOUSE Step Up program supports new artists, companies and work. bAKEHOUSE has long provided opportunities and mentoring, pairing new and emerging artists with professional and experienced practitioners in the crucible of production. The Step Up program at KXT is a formalisation of this, a way of providing the best opportunities to the best people.
Since 2018, Step Up team members have launched their own companies; jumped into opportunities at Belvoir, Griffin, NToP, Darlinghurst TC, Hayes Theatre, Carriageworks and more. Some have gone on to study at NIDA, VCA and WAAPA, and others are recipients of highly regarded awards such as the Rose Byrne scholarship, and the Andrew Cameron fellowship.

In 2021 we are thrilled to be working with the following line up of legends:
The Step Up team is an opportunity program providing support to selected emerging artists. Selection for the team is not a marker of success, but rather based on the opportunities that KXT is able to provide.
Each year time is set aside at KXT to showcase the work of the Step Up team, emerging producers and newly established artists. In 2021 this season will run alongside a program of industry meet ups and panels. Team members participate in a series of production placements, an informal internship program providing on the job training and relationship building.
Through 2020 Step Up pivoted to include Phone A Friend a digital platform keeping artists connected with the industry. Phone A Friend returns in 2021
The team is based in Sydney and runs March – December.
